After thirteen years in the penitentiary, Sone87um is out of the shackles and back in the game. He’s set to continue his history of producing music since the age of ten.

Sone87um faced a life sentence. The South Central Los Angeles native lost his record deal when he went to jail. However, he’s served his time and is now set to claim his respect in the music industry.

Though being incarcerated was a mental struggle for him, Sone87um maintained his wits about himself.

We caught up with Sone87um recently and he was kind enough to break off a little time to talk to Hits You Love Radio.

Welcome back to freedom. How was your time in jail?
It was very difficult. The mental struggle is real. I went into the system as a teenager and served 13 years and 10 months. So I saw a lot of young people that snapped and lost it.

What is your music background?
I’ve been producing music since the age of 10. I just started rapping 2 years prior to my being signed and facing a life sentence at the same time.

Who are your musical influences?
I have way too many to mention. I listen to Sade, Wu-Tang, and PeeWee Longway.

What are your long-term career goals?
Progress as long as I’m constantly progressing and moving forward. I just want everyone to hear the voice of my brothers and sisters. I’m telling our story not just mine.

What type of recording process do you use and who produced your recording? Deptv produced my songs. I just listen and freestyle for awhile before I start recording and figuring what will be what. It’s like writing without all the paper.

Do you ever get the chance to perform live?
Yes, but not lately. I’m still recording for now. I’ve only been out a couple months.

Are you looking for to remain independent or to get a major label deal? Whichever situation is best. I’m not in a rush to be controlled by a major. Still, I’m not against having a big machine on my behalf. It all depends.

If anything, what would you change about the music industry today? Nothing. It’s evolving right now and this is a good time.

Do you have any advice for up-and-coming artists?
Yes! I think too much attention is going to quantity instead of quality. Maintain integrity in your craft because it’s our legacy. We don’t just make music we give voice to the streets they need us.

Anything else you want to say on the people?
Yes, go to Sone87um on SoundCloud. Tap in. It’s going up!
