Ref Records Hits Us with “Switch Hitter”

Ref Records dropped its first project with success. The album “Switch Hitter” by Rox Ran spawned multiple hits, including the Top 10 single “Dear Summer.” This cut reached Number Three on the Dope Urban Jamz Chart. The record impressively held down that position for two weeks.

Stef “Da Ref” is the CEO of Ref Records. He is concerned with addressing the issues of distribution and royalty payouts in today’s music industry. We caught up with him recently and he was kind enough to answer a few questions for Hits You Love Radio.

What is your music background?
I started back in the mid 90s when me and a friend created a midi era label called “Homegrown Recordings.” We would spend days and hours recording and perfecting recording techniques for vocal strategies and music. He had won an amateur rap contest that use to come on Power 99 FM in Philly hosted by DJ Lady B.

Who are your musical influences?
My influences cover many genres of music. Primarily I started admiring the work of Motown, Def Jam, and all of the artist you can associate with those two labels.

What are your long-term career goals?
My long-term goal is to create a Ref Records catalog that can stand the test of time for the dedicated good music lovers and Hip-Hop heads.

If anything, what would you change about the music industry today?
I would get back to original concept music making and get out of trend following. I would also work diligently to solve the distribution problem that now exists with the streaming technology and the royalty payouts.
